Choosing the Drop Length for a Ceiling TV Mount
Drop is the distance from the ceiling down to the top of the screen. Calculate it as ceiling height minus the height of the top of the screen. A 9 foot ceiling with a 55 inch screen centered at 62 inches needs about a 32 inch drop. The mast included with a mount covers 18 to 63 inches depending on the model; past that, a fixed pipe or a telescoping extension makes up the difference.
Size the drop before ordering. It decides whether the mast shipped with the mount is enough, or whether the job needs a fixed pipe or a telescoping extension on top of it.
How do you calculate the drop length?
Work from the floor up, then subtract from the ceiling:
- Pick the screen center height for the viewer (seated eye level 40 to 45 inches; standing rooms usually 60 to 70 inches or higher - see the mounting height guide).
- Top of screen = center height + (panel height / 2). Panel height is about the diagonal times 0.49.
- Drop = ceiling height - top of screen.
Two worked examples
Sports bar, 9 ft ceiling, 55 inch screen for standing viewers. Center at 62 inches; panel height about 27 inches, so the top of the screen sits at 75.5 inches. Drop = 108 - 75.5 = about 32 inches. What about angled or cathedral ceilings?
On a sloped ceiling the mast must still hang plumb; use an angled ceiling plate (11AC005, 11CP006) or the ANGLE-CEILING adapter, then size the drop from the plate's mounting point. See ceiling plates.

Common questions
What length pipe is needed for a ceiling TV mount?
Subtract the height of the top of the screen from the ceiling height. Most mounts include an adjustable mast covering somewhere between 18 and 63 inches depending on the model, which handles ordinary 8 and 9 foot ceilings. Ceilings above about 10 feet usually need a fixed 1.5 inch NPT pipe, available in lengths to 48 inches, or a telescoping extension covering 8 to 72 inches.
Can two pipes be joined for a longer drop?
Yes. Fixed 1.5 inch NPT pipes join with a coupler. The threads seat inside the coupler from both ends, so the assembled length is shorter than the sum of the two pipe lengths. Measure the assembly rather than adding the numbers on the labels.
What if the ceiling is 12 feet or higher?
A telescoping extension covers up to 72 inches of drop and adjusts after installation. Beyond that, fixed 1.5 inch NPT pipes can be joined with a coupler. A 12 foot ceiling with a 43 inch screen at standing height works out to roughly a 73 inch drop, which is at the edge of a single telescoping extension.
How is the drop measured on an angled ceiling?
From the mounting point of the plate, once an angled plate is holding the mast plumb. The mast must hang vertical regardless of the ceiling pitch. Angled ceiling plates 11AC005 and 11CP006 and the ANGLE-CEILING adapter do this.
Can the drop be changed after installation?
A telescoping extension adjusts in 1 inch steps after it is installed. A fixed pipe sets a permanent length. The adjustable mast shipped with a mount moves within its own range, which is listed on each mount's spec page.
