Choosing the Drop Length for a Ceiling TV Mount
The formula, two worked examples, and which mast, pipe, or telescoping extension covers the number you get.
The drop is the distance from the ceiling to the screen. Size it before ordering: it decides whether the mast shipped with the mount is enough, or the job needs a fixed pipe or telescoping extension.
The formula
Work from the floor up, then subtract from the ceiling:
- Pick the screen center height for the viewer (seated eye level 40 to 45 inches; standing rooms usually 60 to 70 inches or higher - see the mounting height guide).
- Top of screen = center height + (panel height / 2). Panel height is about the diagonal times 0.49.
- Drop = ceiling height - top of screen.
Two worked examples
Sports bar, 9 ft ceiling, 55 inch screen for standing viewers. Center at 62 inches; panel height about 27 inches, so the top of the screen sits at 75.5 inches. Drop = 108 - 75.5 = about 32 inches. The adjustable mast shipped with a mount like the 33CE004 (18 to 31 inches) is just short; a 36 inch fixed pipe or a telescoping extension covers it with room to fine-tune.
Storefront window, 12 ft ceiling, 43 inch screen facing out at standing height. Center at 60 inches; top of screen about 70.5 inches. Drop = 144 - 70.5 = about 73 inches - beyond any included mast, so spec a telescoping extension (up to 72 inches) plus the head, or join fixed pipes with a coupler.

Angled ceilings
On a sloped ceiling the mast must still hang plumb; use an angled ceiling plate (11AC005, 11CP006) or the ANGLE-CEILING adapter, then size the drop from the plate's mounting point. See ceiling plates.
